MusiCube

Augmented Reality Musical Instrument

Is there a musical instrument more pointless than Otamatone? Yes.

Ever wanted to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on a set of virtual cubes? Now you can. Made with Unity and Vuforia, similar to AugAnimal. Except MusiCube uses virtual buttons instead of on-screen ones.

I was originally going for an AR piano keyboard but ran into issues because of the lack of good/distinct features on the keyboard image target. Then I decided:

  • It was more trouble than it was worth

  • Why limit myself to piano keys? Why not a colorful scale of cubes?

Thus, MusiCube was born.

Here’s the image target I ended up with, in case anyone’s interested.

A small version of the image target. The lines within the squares exist to create more features for image recognition.

To be honest, the button layout I designed doesn’t work that well, since it’s very easy to press an adjacent button instead of the one intended. But as an overall proof of concept I’m pretty happy with MusiCube.
